Business Edge: African Central Banks Maintain Interest Rates and FATF Grey List

Central banks in Africa, including those in Nigeria and South Africa, are anticipated to maintain their current interest rates despite inflation concerns. Egypt, Morocco, Kenya, and Ghana are also expected to hold steady as they assess the risks to inflation from both domestic and global factors, including geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) have joined forces to navigate the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) Grey List. Collaborative efforts between the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, and Hafsat Bakari from NFIU aim to address FATF challenges through intelligence-sharing and enforcement of compliance measures to combat corruption, terrorism, and insecurity. Nigeria, listed on the Grey List in February 2023, is mandated to fulfil a 19-item action plan by May 2025 to avoid further FATF sanctions.
