Middle East Breaking News

Halfway through the year, we’re taking a look back at the people and the issues that shaped our regular series, now in its 16th year.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A record-setting hiker in his 80s. A pair of middle school students who wrote to the last living survivor of the USS Arizona. A husband and father who was killed after his plane was shot down at war but a man left off a national memorial wall to the fallen.

All three stories are among the regular features in our ongoing series focused on the lives and life challenges of East Tennessee military veterans and their families — Service and Sacrifice.

Just halfway through 2024, WBIR has explored stories of triumph and tragedy, connecting with people across East Tennessee who served in the military so we could tell their stories. Below is a look back on all their stories.
