A British soldier who served in Iraq came back from a traumatic brain injury to defend his country in Afghanistan – only to be killed on duty with a week left of his tour.

Lance Corporal Jamie Webb, 24, from Handforth, Cheshire, died after insurgents attacked his base in the Nad Ali district of Helmand province in the Middle Eastern country – the only allied casualty of the attack.

The promising junior commander had been days away from the end of a stint in Afghanistan – his second after undergoing two brain operations following an unprovoked attack in the street hours after arriving home from Iraq.

And while he was killed more than a decade ago, LCpl Webb’s family are continuing to honour his memory – with a new memorial set to be unveiled on March 26 in his hometown recounting his achievements and saluting his courage.
