Budget airline Bonza has entered voluntary administration following urgent talks about the carrier’s future.

The documentation was filed to The Australian Securities and Investments Commission on Tuesday.

It came hours after the carrier’s concerning decision to cancel flights, stranding thousands of travellers at airports across Australia.

Flights suspended included those to or from Melbourne, the Sunshine Coast, the Gold Coast, Launceston, Alice Springs and others.

Chief executive Tim Jordan said earlier it was a “temporary suspension” while discussions about the viability of Bonza were underway.

“We apologise to our customers who are impacted by this, and we’re working as quickly as possible to determine a way forward that ensures there is ongoing competition in the Australian domestic aviation market,” he said early on Tuesday.
