8. SOUNDBITE (English) Mauro Vieira, Brazilian Foreign Minister:
“The question of the borders of Lebanon. I would also like to mention that we discussed the issue of Gaza, and I told Minister Habib that I came here with a mandate from President Lula to visit Ramallah, to visit Amman and Beirut and to express our support to the two-state solution, the recognition of Palestine, as we do since 2010, as a state, and also the full membership of Palestine at the United Nations.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Mauro Vieira, Brazilian Foreign Minister:
“When the whole conflict started, we worked very hard to try to approve, a resolution that would flag, kind of at least temporary situation with a ceasefire, with the release of all the hostages, Israeli hostages taken, and also the humanitarian help to Gaza and the protection of the civilian population in Gaza.”

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Mauro Vieira, Brazilian Foreign Minister:
“Unfortunately, it was not at that point, there were 3,000 deaths already in this conflict. Until today, we haven’t had a solution and we have now 30,000 dead. So we are against that. We are in favor of humanism. We are in favor of peace. And, of course, stopping this tragic situation that we are seeing in Gaza, where 75% of the casualties are children and women.”

14. SOUNDBITE (English) Abdallah Bou Habib, Lebanese Foreign Minister:
“We welcome today the Brazilian foreign minister because of Brazil’s position regarding what’s happening in the war in Gaza. The minister came to visit Jordan, Ramallah and Lebanon. He didn’t pass by Israel. And this is an important message, I think, hat Brazil is giving to the whole world. That’s what’s happening in Gaza is not acceptable. Around 30,000 Palestinians in Gaza have died so far. And their houses, their homes, the buildings, everything has been destroyed. This is something unacceptable to have. Also, famine or close to famine in the 21st century. And the food is not.. they are not able to, the world community to provide food for the needy ones at all.”

STORYLINE:
Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira discussed Israel’s war in Gaza and the exchange of fire along the Lebanon-Israel border with his Lebanese counterpart Abdallah Bou Habib in Beirut on Tuesday.

Vieira is on a regional tour that has taken him to Jordan and Ramallah, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Brazil has been a harsh critic of Israel’s offensive in the Gaza Strip, where the Palestinian death toll has risen to more than 31,000, mostly women and children, according to the Health Ministry in the besieged territory.

Last month, Brazil recalled its ambassador from Israel, one of the first countries to do so.

The heavy death toll and widespread damage have led to mounting criticism of Israel and growing calls for a cease-fire.
