Ferrari: technicians wanted to try a more loaded rear wing in China + Miami updates not a priority

The 2024 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix, held last weekend at the 5.451-kilometer Shanghai International Circuit, marked Scuderia Ferrari’s weakest performance of the season thus far. Following an impressive one-two finish at the Albert Park circuit in Australia, the absence of a red car on the podium in China was disappointing.

Ferrari struggled to unleash the full potential of their car, a fact acknowledged candidly by team principal Frederic Vasseur. The disappointing outcome of the Chinese Grand Prix highlights the underperformance of the SF-24 single-seater. The car failed to shine and reveal its true capabilities throughout the race weekend. Issues that had been somewhat evident at the Bahrain International Circuit and in Saudi Arabia became more pronounced in China.

Despite calls for significant updates, the disappointment in Shanghai underscores the failure of Ferrari technicians to fully exploit the potential demonstrated by the red car.

However, there’s no panic regarding updates, and here’s why it’s not solely about the absence of upgrades.

To begin with, the outcome of the 2024 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix shouldn’t deflate spirits, just as there was a need to temper expectations after the stellar performance in the Australian Grand Prix. The Shanghai weekend represented a venture into the unknown due to the Chinese circuit’s prolonged absence from the Formula 1 calendar, compounded by the sprint race format. These variables should not be underestimated. While the SF-24 showcased its tire management prowess once again, its pace in China fell short. The widening gap with Red Bull cannot be attributed solely to a lack of car updates.
