Jim Meier has dedicated much of his retirement to commemorating the sacrifices of service members who died in America’s wars by distributing “Honor and Remember” flags to their loved ones.
Friday’s flag presentation, at Willow Lakes Golf Course in Bellevue, hits close to home. He’ll be handing a memorial flag to Sharon Cubrich Baltz in honor of her son, Sgt. Aaron Cubrich, a combat-wounded veteran of two Army tours in Iraq between 2003 and 2007.
Cubrich died Dec. 3 after self-medicating from the effects of post-traumatic stress, Meier said. He was a boyhood friend of Meier’s son, Tate, and a constant presence in the Meier family home.
