International Olympic Committee vice-president John Coates says the war in Gaza does not warrant the same Olympic sanctions for Israel as those imposed on Russia after it invaded Ukraine, due to differences between the two conflicts.
Coates explained the IOC’s position after the peak Olympic body recently rejected calls for Israel to be banned from the Paris Games this year, in the same fashion as the Russian Olympic Committee.
After it was excluded from competing as a nation from the 2020 and 2022 Olympics due to doping violations, Russia was subsequently banned from Paris for its actions in invading Ukraine in 2022, four days after the Winter Olympics in Beijing.
