Toomaj Salehi Death Row:  Popular Persian rapper Toomaj Salehi, famous for his underground performances on issues of human rights and freedom of women, was sentenced to death by an Iranian court on Wednesday for supporting the widespread protests that erupted after the death of Mahsa Amini. Notably, 33-year-old Toomaj has been lodged in jail since October 2022 following his arrest for publically criticising the crackdown of authorities on the protestors.

The September 2022 demonstrations which were triggered by the custodial death of 22-year-old Amini, saw the arrest and further punitive measures against many notable people. Mahasa, a Kurd, who had been detained over an alleged breach of the Islamic Republic’s strict dress rules for women, died while she was under police custody.
