Farmers from across Germany march to Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, for their final rally against agricultural subsidy cuts on Monday, January 15.

It follows a week of nationwide protests against the government’s austerity measures.

Ahead of the demonstrations, Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s administration partially u-turned, scrapping plans to remove the vehicle tax exemption and deciding to phase in the abolition of tax breaks for agricultural diesel – which the German Farmers’ Union called ‘absolutely insufficient’.

The coalition is attempting to plug a 17-billion-euro hole in this year’s budget, with cost-cutting across green energy, construction, and support for industry.
