Scientists at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) have begun the world’s largest coral restoration project ever.
The KAUST Coral Restoration Initiative (KCRI) is a fresh coral nursery located on the NEOM coast, in northwest Saudi Arabia. It’s aiming to produce 40,000 corals each year. This is an important leap towards global reef restoration, with a second facility in progress. Its capacity? Ten times more the the first one, it can nurture 400,000 corals per year.
This initiative presents a revolutionary move, even in its prototype stage. It makes the way for the world’s largest and most sophisticated land-based coral nursery.
