LEBANON, Tenn. (WSMV) – The Sheriff’s Office in Wilson County is warning people of a phone scam involving a person pretending to have kidnapped a child to gain access to the victim’s personal information.

The Wilson County Sheriff said during these calls, the scammer indicates that a young child, related to the victim, has been kidnapped or seriously injured, even placing a child on the phone in some cases, to plead for help.

Their advice is to contact local law enforcement and verify the safety of your child by checking in with family members, the school principal, teachers, or School Resource Officers. Never follow links or allow the call to be redirected.

The WCSO added that other local law enforcement agencies are reporting cases of a similar phone scam.
