Osama bin Laden killed by U S forces

#shorts

Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States, was killed by U.S. forces during a raid on his compound hideout in Pakistan. The notorious leader of Al Qaeda, a terrorist network of Islamic extremists, had been the target of a nearly decade-long international manhunt.

The raid commenced around 1 a.m. local time (4 p.m. EST on May 1, 2011) when 23 U.S. Navy SEALs in two Black Hawk helicopters descended on the compound in Abbottabad, north of Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad. Despite one helicopter crash-landing into the compound, no one was injured.

During the 40-minute raid, five people, including bin Laden and one of his sons, were killed by U.S. gunfire. No Americans were harmed. Bin Laden’s body was flown to Afghanistan for official identification and then buried at sea within 24 hours, following Islamic tradition.

President Barack Obama, who monitored the raid in real time, announced bin Laden’s death from the White House just after 11:30 p.m. EST on May 1. The news sparked celebrations outside the White House, in Times Square, and at Ground Zero in New York City.

Evidence collected during the raid revealed bin Laden’s plans to assassinate President Obama and carry out further attacks on the U.S., including one on the anniversary of September 11. President George W. Bush had vowed to capture bin Laden, who was born into a wealthy Saudi Arabian family and used his inheritance to fund Al Qaeda. Despite a close encounter in 2001, bin Laden continued to evade capture until his death in 2011.
