WATERTOWN, Mass. (WFXT) – A referee in Massachusetts died Friday after he collapsed during a middle school basketball game.
Don McGillicuddy, 56, suffered a cardiac emergency and collapsed on the Watertown Middle School court with just seconds left on the clock during a girls’ basketball game.
Sadly, his family wasn’t at the game that night, but they say they are thankful he was surrounded by a basketball community who loved him.
“I wish I was there. I hope he wasn’t scared. I hope he wasn’t alone,” his daughter Erica DeJesus said.
An athletic trainer, first responders and good Samaritans rushed to the court with an AED.
DeJesus said her father was revived with the AED, but once EMTs arrived to transport McGillicuddy to the hospital, he suffered a second heart attack in the ambulance.
