Saudi Arabia: Fitness Influencer Jailed for 11 Years Over Clothing & Female Empowerment

A women’s rights activist and fitness influencer from Saudi Arabia has been sentenced to 11 years in prison over her choice of clothes. Manahel al-Otaibi was sentenced on January 9 for what the officials described as “terrorist offences”. The 29-year-old fitness influencer was arrested in November 2022 after making numerous social media posts about female empowerment. She had been protesting against the country’s male guardianship rules. However, rights groups have pointed to an irony in her case. Al-Otaibi was a vocal supporter of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman and praised MBS’ “radical changes” and relaxation of dress code for women.
