Raisina Dialogue 2024 | The Democracy Divide: Universal Norms & Local Practices | There are various global headwinds facing the democratic system. These include the rise of authoritarianism, disruptive technologies, populism, fake news – and the notion among voters that democracy is failing ordinary citizens. Consequently, democracy must be reclaimed bottom-up to make it locally relevant and grounded, while still retaining its fundamental attributes of rule of law, separation of powers, and popular sovereignty. While democracy is a universal norm, its contextual application is a prerequisite for its success.

How can democracy be made real and attractive in diverse and digital societies?

How can differences in existing democratic practices be reconciled and respected across geographies?

How can cultural moorings continue to underpin democratic structures and the delivery of political rights across the world?

In a hyper-globalised world, can we prevent the weaponisation of differences in the administration of democracy by state and non-state actors?
