Britain’s sure-footed response to Iran’s attempted bombardment of Israel marks a significant step in addressing the rising tensions that have been simmering for decades.

A glance at Britain’s history shows it is interwoven with the Middle East. Our voice remains respected, and our economic and military connections underline our appetite and ability to be a force for good.

No wonder Prime Minister Rishi Sunak did not hesitate to deploy the RAF assets based in Cyprus to help intercept the swarm of Iranian missiles and drones heading for Israel. This is the first state-on-state attack by Tehran.

They normally command their proxies, Hamas, Hezbollah or the Houthis, to do their dirty work, the better to distance themselves from any direct blame.

The scale of this unprecedented attack would have had catastrophic consequences had it not been for Israel’s world-beating iron dome air defence system.

So understandably Israelwill not let this pass – or such errant …
