Knoxville woman works to find veteran gravesites [Video]

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – Camouflaged in stillness along the banks of the Tennessee River, an unassuming piece of land serves as the final resting place for some of Knoxville’s bravest heroes. “We know for sure there are other people buried here, but the headstones are lost,” said Marilyn Childress as she walked through Lebanon in the Forks Cemetery in South Knoxville. She is working to restore veteran headstones. The cemetery sits off Asbury Road and is an essential piece of history that many Knoxvillians don’t even realize is there.

“The mothers and the fathers and the daughters and brothers of people who actually formed Knoxville are here,” she said. “Our mission is to be able to bring these headstones back to life for people to know about them.”
